Strengthening our commitment to the environment

At Novartis, our commitment to responsible environmental stewardship is contained within our Corporate Citizenship policy.

Initiatives to increase energy efficiency and decrease water consumption, solvent emissions, and waste are part and parcel of this commitment.

Since 2006, Novartis has achieved a 21% improvement in energy efficiency, well beyond our 10% target. Greenhouse gas emissions have also been held in check through campus-wide energy efficiency programs, all while NIBR has experienced significant growth in personnel, buildings, and energy intensive research equipment and tools.

A new target of 10% in energy savings and 6% in absolute total emission reduction has been set through 2015.

We expect the trend in improved energy efficiency to continue. For example, all of our new building designs incorporate many sustainable "green" design concepts, which reduce energy consumption by as much as 20%, and water consumption by 57% over traditional building design.
