About Novartis

Postdoctoral positions

Cutting-edge research in an industry environment

Our Presidential Postdoctoral Fellowship program provides talented scientists with a unique opportunity to perform high-quality research in an environment with the resources of a large pharmaceutical company. Each year, innovative scientists from academia are selected to become fellows and collaborate with leading pharmaceutical discovery scientists pursuing multidisciplinary research projects. Together, they apply their expertise to discovering new medicines that will help patients lead healthier lives.

Scientific training, mentoring, and opportunities

The program provides rigorous scientific training, while supporting flexibility in the fellow’s future career options in industry or academia. Fellows design their own research plan and receive guidance from two mentors: a senior researcher at NIBR and a faculty member from an academic institution. Fellows are expected to publish their work in peer-reviewed journals and present their research at international scientific meetings. They also have regular opportunities to present their work within Novartis and interact with NIBR scientific leaders.
Fellows are appointed to a single 3-year term and may conduct research at one of our global sites:

  • Basel, Switzerland,
  • Cambridge, Massachusetts, US,
  • East Hanover, New Jersey, US,
  • Emeryville, California, US, or
  • Horsham, UK.

The application process: interviews and research proposal

Graduate students within one year of completing their doctoral work and postdoctoral fellows nearing completion of their first postdoctoral training period (within three years of obtaining their Ph.D.) are eligible to apply. If selected, the candidate will have an initial interview with a member of the NIBR Education Office. The second stage includes a full-day, on-site interview, during which the candidate conducts a research seminar and meets potential NIBR mentors and current postdoctoral fellows. Lastly, the candidate submits a research proposal written in close collaboration with their NIBR and academic mentors.
